House-Hasson Shows Off Expansion Efforts

Hardware distributor House-Hasson recently provided a tour of distribution center expansion moves to Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs.

House-Hasson is adding 100,000 square feet to its existing 400,000-square-foot warehouse in Knoxville, Tenn.

While meeting with company employees, Jacobs told them that House-Hasson is a “great example of American business at work.”

Jacobs was hosted on his tour by Don Hasson, president of the 113-year-old company. One of the nation’s largest independent regional hardware distributors, the family-owned company serves some 2,500 independent hardware store and lumberyard dealers in 23 states and throughout the Caribbean Basin.

Hasson told the mayor that when the expansion is completed about 50 employees would be added to the company’s existing 440 employee roster. House-Hasson has a second warehouse in Prichard. W. Va.

House-Hasson’s latest expansion is the third since it moved in 1979 from downtown Knoxville to its present site on Water Plant Road in Forks of the River Industrial Park. The warehouse contains 55,000 items.

A principal factor in the decision to expand was House-Hasson’s purchase earlier this year of $2.5 million in inventory from Hardware Distributor Warehouses, which closed its doors earlier this year.

House-Hasson expands with HDW assets

Knoxville, Tenn.-based distributor House-Hasson Hardware is expanding, thanks to the acquisition of inventory and key salespeople from the now defunct Hardware Distribution Warehouses.

According to House-Hasson, the new hires and the $2.5 million purchase of HDW inventory are generating a 100,000 square-foot expansion of House-Hasson’s Knoxville, Tenn., headquarters. The moves are also bringing House-Hasson new customers in several U.S. states, the company said.

The combined cost will be about $10 million for the Hardware Distribution Warehouse (HDW) inventory and Knoxville warehouse expansion to 500,000 square feet, said Don Hasson, president of House-Hasson Hardware.

“We’ve added eight former HDW salesmen, which is growing our customer base in Texas, Louisiana  and Arkansas,” Hasson said. “With their territorial knowledge and our focus on store dealer profitability, they’re having an immediate impact; we’ve quickly added 200 new hardware store and lumberyard customers.”

HDW, based in Greenwood, Miss., ceased operations on Jan. 4, 2019.

Knoxville’s warehouse expansion will bring to 750,000 square feet the combined size of House-Hasson’s Knoxville and Prichard, W. Va. warehouses. In 2018, Prichard underwent a 50,000 square-foot enlargement and modernization.

The Knoxville’s warehouse is expected to be completed in summer 2019. Until then, the HDW inventory will be split between Knoxville and Prichard.

Orgill Spring 2018 Dealer Market Recap

Measuring in at about 1 million square feet of exhibit space, the Feb. 22-24 Orgill Spring Dealer Market attracted independent home improvement retailers from around the world. The Orlando event features vendors from across the industry, special buys and Market-only specials, networking opportunities, according to the Memphis-based hardware distributor.

“Our merchants and vendors have teamed up to add the items our customers want,” says Jeff Curler, senior VP of purchasing. “Many products are being offered at deeply discounted prices, and a number of our vendors are offering creative merchandising ideas to help retailers stand out from the competition.”

Around the perimeter of the Market floor are a number of promotional areas, including Door Busters, Pallet Buys, New Items and more. In these areas, attendees can shop for products at low, Market-only prices.

Outside the convention center itself, retailers can find the Outdoor Grilling Area, which made its debut at the Market last summer in Boston. This area highlights products from the outdoor living, grilling and tailgate categories.

Two particularly popular areas of the show floor are the concept stores, where two full-size model stores are set up, showcasing real-life displays, product assortments and merchandising techniques.

Central Tool & Building Supply is a pro-focused, 8,000-square-foot store that’s also 100-percent Canadian-compliant. Its primary niche is hand and power tools, but it also offers a deep selection of paint and sundries, plumbing, and electrical products.

The second concept store is Green River Hardware & Garden, which encompasses 15,000-square-foot and showcases space-saving techniques by stocking a 25,000 SKU count. Niches include outdoor power equipment, outdoor living and lawn and garden.

“Our customers are looking for ideas of how to use their space effectively, especially by best utilizing the footprint they currently have, rather than expanding,” says Phillip Walker, senior vice president of merchandising services. “In this model store, we’re showing them a number of solutions.”

Also popular are the Product Showcases. In Orlando, the focusis on construction fasteners, rental, impulse and worldwide sourcing. The seasonal flex showcase displays how retailers can adapt their assortments with the seasons to gain year-round sales.

Some of the educational opportunities include “Retail Pricing,” “Social Media in the Real World,” “Should You Sell on Amazon?” and “Why Loyalty Marketing Works.” Other clinics and workshops cover topics such as marketing tactics, strong in-store promotional efforts and cybersecurity.

Next up for Orgill: the Fall Dealer Market will be Aug. 23-25 at the Sands Expo Convention Center in Las Vegas.

“We always look forward to our Dealer Markets because they give us the opportunity to interact with our customers and provide them with a wide range of products, programs and services to drive their businesses,” says Ron Beal, Orgill’s chairman, president and CEO. “We’re excited to share all that Orgill has to offer.”

Keeney Introduces Push-fit Under-Sink Plumbing System

The Keeney Manufacturing Company says its new Insta-Plumb is a quick and easy under-sink drainage system that creates a watertight connection without the use of glues and primers.

“We are excited about the capabilities of this new product line,” says Stuart Holden, president of the Newington, Conn.-based company. “The innovative features offered by Insta-Plumb will revolutionize installing and repairing under-sink drainage.”

Continuing a trend toward simpler installation in the plumbing category, Insta-Plumb features a “push-fit” application unlike traditional plumbing. Instead, it creates a watertight connection without glues, primers, solvents, nuts, or washers.

The secured connection created when using Insta-Plumb saves installers time and money, the company explains, but it also eliminates callbacks. “With Insta-Plumb installers can instantly test their installations and be ready to use for your application in minutes.”

Installation is quick and easy, but it’s also reusable and easy to adjust once installed. A user places the release tool on the pipe and applies pressure to the coupling to release the connection; the fitting can then be adjusted or removed and reused as desired.

Insta-Plumb offers a wide range of under sink couplings and fittings for installation or typical repairs in bathrooms, kitchens, mobile homes, or anywhere under-sink drainage is needed.

House-Hasson Summer Market Attendance Increase

House-Hasson Hardware reported an increase in attendance of at least 15% at its recent summer dealer market, which took place June 15-17 at the Wilderness of the Smokies Resort in Sevierville, Tenn.

The mojo behind the boost? More product offerings and stronger vendor partnerships, said Don Hasson, the company’s president.

“There’s a greater appreciation among vendors that we have a common goal, and that working with us in partnership for the benefit of our hardware store and lumberyard dealers is in vendors’ interest as well,” Hasson said. “Dealer profitability is our daily focus. Our vendors understand that and work with us to bring about greater dealer profitability.”

“Infusing new offerings into the deals offered on the market floor was a boost to the vendor base,” said Jason Monroe, House-Hasson’s vice president of merchandising.

“We branched out at this market with more vendors offering products for outdoor living, outdoor cooking, and for sporting goods,” Monroe said.

“We had an expanded number of vendors offering eco-friendly products,” he added. “In the past dealers have had the impression that eco-friendly products weren’t as good or cost too much. They’ve seen that these products have improved, are high quality, and there’s a real market for them.”

The approximately 600 vendors at the House-Hasson dealer market also saw many new dealers’ faces, said Pat McCutcheon, House-Hasson vice president of sales.

“What stood out at the market apart from an increased number of vendors were the new faces among our dealers who came to the market for the first time,” McCutcheon said. “Some of them were dealers who have converted to House-Hasson, who are learning about us as we expand our outreach in Louisiana and Texas, and others were dealers we’ve had for some time who we’ve been encouraging to come and enjoy the House-Hasson experience.”

McCutcheon said he’s also seeing a generational changeover among dealers.

“Among some of the dealers we’ve been working with for a long time I’m seeing their sons and daughters come to the market either because they’ve been handed the baton and assumed responsibility for the family business or are being groomed for the role.”
